Here are the most important things all of us should be doing right now to plug the many data holes. <\/span><b>Get comfy.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Plugging the holes takes time, so take this task on in small bites.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #efb217;\"><span style=\"caret-color: #efb217;\">BUTTON UP YOUR FACEBOOK ACCOUNT<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>ADJUST YOUR SECURITY SETTINGS. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Follow these instructions or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/video\/facebook-security\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">watch a short video<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! Click on the downward facing arrow at the top right corner of your Facebook Page. Choose Settings. On the left-hand sidebar go down the list one-by-one. Pay particular attention to:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Security and Login:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Choose \u201cLog Out of All Sessions\u201d. After you log back in from a computer, return to the same place and change your password before logging back in on any other device. Use as many of the security features listed on this page as you are comfortable with.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Apps and Websites:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Check out all the apps you are logged into and what data they harvest! Hover over each one to delete it or change the settings to private. Best to delete as many as you can, and never log into apps through Facebook. Scroll a bit further down to turn off Games and Apps Notifications to stop getting all those invitations to play Candy Crush and other apps that harvest data.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Ads: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Control the kinds of ads Facebook sends by clicking off topics in \u201cYour Interests\u201d. Click OFF companies that have your data in the next \u201cAdvertisers you\u2019ve interacted with\u201d section. Turn OFF all the options in \u201cYour information\u201d. Choose NO\/NO ONE for all the options listed in the \u201cAd settings\u201d section to prevent future sharing and harvesting of your data.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong><b>MAKE YOUR FACEBOOK PAGE LESS PUBLIC. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On your Facebook page, click the About tab. Move down the page section by section, hovering over each piece of personal information to highlight the icons for editing privacy settings. Delete information, or change it to be visible to your friends or only to you. You can manage privacy settings for each section, and can choose to hide entire sections from view. Unless you need others to know where you work, where you went to school, who your friends are, and what groups you belong to, make those sections private. <\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>CHECK YOURSELF OUT. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To see how your facebook page looks to the outside world, go back to the downward arrow in the upper right corner, choose Settings, choose Timeline and Tagging, and then look for \u201cReview what other people see on your timeline.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #efb217;\"><span style=\"caret-color: #efb217;\">BUTTON UP YOUR GOOGLE ACTIVITY<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>ADJUST YOUR ACCOUNT&#8217;S SECURITY SETTINGS<\/b><b>. <\/b>Go to <a href=\"https:\/\/myaccount.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">your account settings<\/a>, and w<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alk though all the steps one-by-one. Pay particular attention to:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Sign-In &amp; Security: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/myaccount.google.com\/security-checkup?continue=https:\/\/myaccount.google.com\/security\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Security Checkup<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tool, and follow any recommendations. Change your password. Check to make sure that the apps that have access to your account are ones you trust and use, and delete any that you don\u2019t. Make sure the \u201cAllow less secure apps\u201d toggle is set to OFF.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Personal Info &amp; Privacy: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/myaccount.google.com\/privacycheckup\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Privacy Checkup<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tool to adjust your settings to the most private options available. Be sure to UNCHECK the box on the Shared Endorsements page that would allow google to include your personal data in its ads. Be sure to DISABLE the option for Google to collect data on your web &amp; app activity, location history, voice &amp; audio activity, and YouTube search and watch history. Turn OFF ad personalization.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><b>Account preferences: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delete any accounts and services you no longer use.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #efb217;\"><span style=\"caret-color: #efb217;\">BUTTON UP YOUR DEVICES<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Use passwords and fingerprints<\/strong> to lock your devices.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Always update your devices<\/strong> as soon as you\u2019re notified.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Cover the cameras<\/strong> on your computer and phone with a small piece of electrical tape.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Some browsers are more secure<\/strong> than others. Firefox and Chrome seem to be the most highly regarded. Firefox recently released an extension called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2018\/03\/27\/mozillas-new-extension-keeps-your-facebook-data-isolated-to-the-social-network-itself\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook Container<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Install a tracker blocker<\/strong> like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghostery.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ghostery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Navigate directly via the web.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">NEVER<\/span><\/strong> share links, memes, videos, or events from unverified sources. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">NEVER<\/span><\/strong> open pm\u2019s or email from unknown or suspicious sources (sometimes disguised as your real friends).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">NEVER<\/span><\/strong> feed trolls by reacting to or commenting on their posts or comments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">NEVER<\/span><\/strong> share extremist content, even to point out how extreme it is. Find out if you have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/help\/817246628445509\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interacted with Russian posts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">NEVER<\/span><\/strong> post anything that you wouldn\u2019t want the whole world to see.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>BACKGROUND<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2018\/3\/21\/17141428\/cambridge-analytica-trump-russia-mueller\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cambridge Analytica<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a political consulting and data collection firm with ties to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2018\/3\/23\/17151916\/facebook-cambridge-analytica-trump-diagram\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steve Bannon and the Trump Campaign<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, collected private information from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/04\/04\/technology\/mark-zuckerberg-testify-congress.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">87 million Facebook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> users <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/2018\/mar\/17\/cambridge-analytica-facebook-influence-us-election\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">without consent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Cambridge uses the data to create <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2017\/10\/16\/15657512\/cambridge-analytica-facebook-alexander-nix-christopher-wylie\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cpsychographic\u201d profiles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of voters and the firm is now charged with using the data to intentionally alter the outcome of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-43476762\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">200 elections worldwide,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including the 2016 US presidential election and the UK\u2019s Brexit vote. How did this happen? The short answer: Facebook <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2018\/mar\/21\/mark-zuckerberg-response-facebook-cambridge-analytica\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lost control of the data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gleaned by third party apps.
