UPDATE: Haspel has been confirmed.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n [\/et_pb_blurb][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.0.89″ background_layout=”light”]<\/p>\n Trump Administration & Federal Government Working Group<\/a> C2A<\/strong><\/p>\n Update 5\/17: Haspel has been confirmed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n During the Bush administration, Gina Haspel was<\/span> in charge of a secret prison<\/span><\/a> in Thailand where the US<\/span> tortured prisoners<\/span><\/a>, which is illegal under American and international law and effectively makes her a<\/span> war criminal<\/span><\/a>. In addition, she helped ensure videotapes of torture sessions were destroyed. Haspel has<\/span> spent her entire career<\/span><\/a> in clandestine operations, so almost nothing is known of her career. The little <\/span>that is known<\/span><\/a> shows a<\/span> willingness<\/span><\/a> to<\/span> employ torture<\/span><\/a> and lie about it. Confirming Haspel to this critical role would harm our international alliances, since the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights<\/span> has already indicated<\/span><\/a> that it will<\/span> push for her arrest<\/span><\/a> on war crimes charges if she sets foot in Europe. She will not face an easy confirmation hearing. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) has<\/span> announced<\/span><\/a> that he will not support her, and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has indicated<\/span> serious reservations<\/span><\/a>. The CIA has received five letters from committee members<\/a> asking for more information on Haspel, but the CIA has ignored all requests.\u00a0Sen. Susan Collins has said that while Haspel is likely to face questions about past actions, she will<\/span> withhold judgment<\/span><\/a> until the confirmation hearings. Angus King has<\/span> expressed concern<\/span><\/a> about Haspel\u2019s role in torture and extraordinary rendition and will be looking for answers in the hearings. Both senators sit on the Intelligence Committee, which will be conducting the hearings and initial vote. Late last week, Haspel announced she was considering withdrawing her name from consideration<\/a>, although senior White House aides have since convinced her to stay.
