THE ISSUE<\/span><\/h4>\n

At a time when Mainers are reeling over the <\/span>deaths of two young girls<\/span><\/a> due to child abuse, Maine\u2019s Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) recently announced plans to discontinue funding the <\/span>Community Partnership for Protecting Children<\/span><\/a>. The program<\/span> addresses underlying causes of child abuse<\/span><\/a> in Maine through a network of social service providers, law enforcement, schools, and communities in <\/span>12 counties<\/span><\/a>, by strengthening families and protecting children. In South Portland alone, <\/span>more than 1,600 people<\/span><\/a> receive help each year. \u00a0The LePage administration claims the initiative is redundant to the <\/span>Child Abuse and Neglect Councils of Maine<\/span><\/a> run by the Maine Department of Corrections. LePage also claims that the program is not evidence based, despite the CDC listing the kind of work CPPC does as a science based protective factor in <\/span>reducing cases of abuse<\/span><\/a>. \u00a0Maine\u2019s two recent child abuse deaths are <\/span>raising questions<\/span><\/a> about <\/span>inadequate resources<\/span><\/a> within LePage\u2019s DHHS system, adding to the Governor\u2019s long and shameful record of neglecting the welfare of Maine\u2019s most vulnerable children. Poverty is a <\/span>major contributing factor<\/span><\/a> to abuse and neglect of children, significantly <\/span>increasing the risk of fatality<\/span><\/a> in abuse cases. Under LePage:<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Maine\u2019s child poverty rate <\/b>increased 8 times faster than the national average<\/b>
\n<\/b><\/a>Cases of confirmed <\/b>child abuse have increased by 52%<\/b>
\n<\/b><\/a>Maine is the only state in the nation where <\/b>infant mortality has increased<\/b><\/a>
\n<\/b>1 in 5 Maine children suffer food insecurity<\/b><\/a>
\n<\/b><\/p>\n

Contact your local reps<\/b><\/a> and urge them to renew the $2.2 million in funding for the Community Partnership for Protecting Children, and to take immediate action to address funding shortages within DHHS.<\/span><\/p>\n
