THE ISSUE
UPDATE 4/26: Pompeo has been confirmed. Both Collins and King voted in favor of his nomination.
Former congressman Mike Pompeo, who has served as CIA Director for the past 14 months, is known for his hawkish position on Iraq and has a troubling record of blindly supporting Trump. He falsely claimed the U.S. intelligence community doubts Russian interference in the 2016 election affected the outcome, opposes the Iran nuclear deal, and supported torture and Guatanamo. He has a long history of anti-Muslim comments and was recognized in 2016 with the highest honor awarded by ACT for America, the largest anti-Muslim hate group in the U.S. If confirmed, policy experts suggest Pompeo would enable Trump’s worst impulses. Pompeo faced a tough hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee last week and faces strong opposition from Democrats on the committee, which will vote this week on his nomination. Senate Leader Mitch McConnell says he will bring the nomination to the floor for a vote even if the committee rejects him. With red state Democrats Manchin (WV) and Heitkamp (ND) publicly pledging their support for Pompeo, another Republican will need to join Rand Paul (KY) to block him. Susan Collins and Angus King have both indicated they will vote to confirm him.
THE ACTION
- Call and write senators Angus King (202-224-5344) and Susan Collins (202-224-2523) and urge them to vote NO on Pompeo’s confirmation if he comes before the full Senate for a vote.
